One night on the volcano
As the eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull in Island has become a great demonstration of that kind of nature power I´ll take the opportunity to tell about my great adventure on the volcano "Pacaya" in Guatemala.
I think were more tan one guardian angels saving my live at that night and the "dance on the volcano" was actually a stupidity.
I was in Antigua/Guatemala with a great view to the volcanos "Agua" and "Fuego" and saw in the newspaper that volcano "Pacaya" had a eruption. Crazy as I am I immediately wanted to see that live and I went with my Guatemalan friend Antonio by bus about 100 km to that place.
The foto on the left I shot during the bustravel.
It was really difficult to come on that mountain because of course most people took the way downwards :-) I paid someone to bring us as close as possible with a pickup, we met two other crazy guatemalan guys and in the mornig we started to climb the Pacaya.
When we arrived almost in the evening at a oppsite hill about 500 meters away from the firebreathing crater. What you notice during the day as a cloud of smoke chances in the night to a incredible fountain of glowing lava.
There was a defeaning thunder and we were hit continously by pieces of lavarocks.
Our luck was that there was a incredible storm with icecold wind who blew in the other direcction so that few of the really big lavarocks did reach our place.
Immediatly we started with machetes building a little "Wall" of dead knots of bushes and bigger stones that we collected. this lasted almost all night because it was raining more and more rocks and with that incredible noices and the sparkling lava fountains it was not possible to close a eye. I was beeter equipped as my guatemalan friends so I gave them what I had to wear because it was so cold there in that stormy icy wind.
As soon as th morning came and we could see the way we went back.
This was really crazy and as I am crazy it inspired me to do a fireworks juggling. With this I almost burned the sportspalace in Tbilisi with about 10.000 people in there because the floor wasn´t painted with a fireresistant painting and began to burn everywhere....
"Ara Problema" they say in Tbilisi (Georgia) and I am sure that the floor is still black :-) When I did it in Montreal during a performance in a public place the firebrigade stopped me because someone has called them saying : "they throw bombs" :-)
